Why “Sputnik”?
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1. The world’s first artificial satellite, it was about the size of a basketball and weighed only 183 pounds. Sputnik’s launch marked the start of space age and the US – USSR space race. The shape of the bead with its many spokes resembles Sputnick the satellite.
