Wondering what makes Murano glass the best in the world? Here’s a very brief account.... The history of Murano glass is interesting in the fact that Murano, Italy, is the longest lasting center for glass making in history. It spans from the 7th century to today. Murano is a small island North West of the city of Venice, Italy - not much larger than a few square miles.
Murano was a commercial port as far back as the 7th Century, and by the 10th Century it had grown into a prosperous trading center with its own coins, police force, and commercial aristocracy. Then, in 1291, the Venetian Republic ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano because the glassworks represented a fire danger in Venice, whose buildings were mostly wooden at the time.
What made Murano's glassmakers so special? For one thing, they were the only people in Europe who knew how to make a mirror. They also developed or refined technologies such as crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Their virtual monopoly on quality glass lasted for centuries, until glassmakers in Northern and Central Europe introduced new techniques and fashions around the same time that colonists were immigrating to the New World. Murano or Venetian glass as crafted by master artisans; is considered the best in the world, even today. Their knowledge of glass making has been passed on through generations and they have a museum that showcases their history and talents...which was founded in 1861. The Murano Glass Museum houses examples of works from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, and is located on the upper floor of the ex Bishop's Palace of Torcello, also known as the Palazzo Giustinian.
