Rhyolite is a volcanic rock which contains silica. The Greeks named it “rhyax” meaning stream; because of the way the bands of colors flow together. The stone's mossy greens, browns and grays are also reminiscent of a rainforest, hence its nickname – rainforest jasper.
Rhyolite represents change, variety and progress, it is known as the “stone of resolution”. It is said to light the fire of creativity within the soul and help with self-realization, which is why it is often used to overcome writer’s/artist’s block and bring creative energies to life.
Historically, it was used as a medicine to improve skin problems through gentle massage and placing it in bath/shower water. Lore also tells of its powers to balance the emotions, and increase self-respect and self-worth. Rhyolite occurs largely in the Western and Southwestern US.
Jasper is a form of opaque, usually patterned; chalcedony found in massive formations, often stained by impurities and occurs in various colors such as red, green, yellow and blue. This hard and durable gemstone was cherished for its beauty and mystical properties from ancient times. Because of its physical properties, engravers of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt carved this stone into exquisite cameos, intaglios and scarabs, the Native American Indians also considered it a sacred stone.
